Guides - Choosing a beginner electric guitar

Buying your first Beginner Electric Guitar (or a gift for somebody) is an exciting experience, but your initial quesition is what is the best beginner electric guitar to buy?....there are so many options!?!....so where do I begin? Here's a round up of great value entry level models to help you to make an informed decision and choose the right guitar, be it for yourself or for a present.

We start with models from the Epiphone range. Epiphone are the sister company of Gibson (one of the biggest and most famous guitar brands in the world), so irrelavant of what price you pay, you know you'll be getting a great quality guitar with classic styling. First up is the Epiphone Les Paul Special II, it features a slim downed body of the legendary Les Paul Standard guitar and includes 2 open coil Alnico V Humbucker pickups for that classic sound. It comes in a range of 5 colours options and is even available as a Left Handed model - Epiphone Les Paul Special II Left Handed.  If the other legendary Gibson shape is for you - the SG - then look no further than the Epiphone SG Special. It's classic double cutaway body and powerful humbucker pickups allow for a true rock experience and you also get a choice of two colours.

Now alongside Gibson, the 'other' biggest guitar name in the world has to be Fender. Like Gibson, Fender have a sister company in the shape of Squier - delivering the infamous Fender styling but at super affordable price points, ideal for the beginner. We'll start with the Squier Affinity Stratocaster - it is available in two fingerboard options, Rosewood (for a slightly warm tone) and Maple (for a slightly bright tone) and of course a Left Handed model is again available - Squier Affinity Stratocaster Left Handed. These models are highly versatile thanks to their 3 pickup configuration and feature a tremolo arm to allow you to manipulate/bend the note. A Squier Affinity Stratocaster Fat Strat is also available which is identical bar the Humbucker pickup which has been added to allow for a 'fatter' tone. Also it's not just 'full size' people that want to play electric guitar, so here we have the Squier Mini Electric Guitar designed for children. It features all the same styling as their bigger brothers but in a more comfortable 3/4 size scale.

Fender's other famous model apart from the Stratocaster is the Telecaster. Again, Squier produce a superb value Telecaster in the form of the Squier Affinity Telecaster. The Telecaster differs from Stratocaster not only in body shape but in tone - delivering more 'twang' and slightly brighter in tone thanks to it's unique pickup choice. A lovely left handed model is also available - the Squier Afiinity Telecaster Left Handed in a beautiful Butterscotch finish.

Alongside buying your first electric guitar you will have to purchase an amp to amplify the sound, here is the range - Practice Amps. If all these amp options seem too daunting then good options are the Line 6 Spider 15, Marshall MG10CFR or the Fender Mustang I. A cable is required to plug your guitar in the amp, a great option here and we would highly recommend a guitar tuner, of which the Korg GA1 is the best option.
